About this Lecture
In this program, participants will learn about domestic violence as it relates to animal welfare, including animal cruelty. Beginning with a summary of knowledge on the human-animal bond, participants will understand how perpetrators of domestic violence exploit this bond to exert power and control over both human and animal victims. Barriers to escape at both the intrafamilial and systems levels will be addressed, with a focus on barriers specifically involving getting animals to safety. Following a review of myths about domestic violence that impede helping, opportunities for involvement by veterinary professionals at various levels will be covered. The program will conclude with a discussion of resources for veterinary professionals to build their knowledge, locate community programs addressing animal-related needs in the context of domestic violence, and obtain financial support for assisting in this work.
