Veterinary nurses and technicians provide an essential clinical role in the triage and management of a vast range of wounds in traumatic and emergent patients. This lecture invites you to explore the key stages required for the assessment and treatment of wounds, alongside the care planning required for the wound patient.

We will discuss a wide range of wound dressings and their correct application for a variety of wounds, ranging from sterile surgical incisions to infected and chronic non-healing wounds.

You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge to patient case studies within this lecture, and gain confidence as a clinical practitioner in wound care.

Flick Caldwell

DipAVN(Surg & Anaes). BSc(Hons) CVN DipHECVN RVN

Flick qualified as a RVN in 2006 in a small animal practice in the Highlands of Scotland. She moved to Yorkshire to pursue a career in referral nursing and gained the RCVS Diploma in Advanced nursing, specialising in anaesthesia, surgery and OR practice. Flick has extensive experience working as a specialist referral nurse predominantly in ICU care, surgery, and anaesthesia, and has undertaken specialist training programmes and mentored VN and Veterinary students.

Flick moved into teaching in 2020 as a VN educator and quickly progressed on to becoming a university lecturer in Animal Health and Science. Flick’s passion for teaching clinical diseases and pathophysiology has led to a specialist interest in clinical anatomy and pathology. She plans to gain a master’s degree in clinical anatomy to advance her clinical knowledge in the treatment and management of medical and surgical conditions. Flick’s experience in anatomy labs has led to a passion of teaching anatomy & pathophysiology through guided dissections and interactive CPD sessions.

Flick is a keen academic writer and enjoys research that leads to making proactive changes to provide evidence-based, best-practice nursing care to veterinary patients. She is currently studying for the ISVPS advanced nurse certificate in surgery and will also be starting university in September to study for an MSc in advanced veterinary nursing (incorporating surgery and pain management techniques).

Flick comes as a ‘duo’ with her Medical Detection Dog partnership with super-Labrador, Bowie. He alerts Flick to impending hypotensive episodes that can lead to dangerous syncope-related crises. Flick is a huge advocate for mental health and frequently speaks about mental health disorders and living with disability, imposter syndrome, and complex PTSD.

Dr Philip Judge

BVSc MVS PG Cert Vet Clin Stud MACVSc (Vet. Emergency and Critical Care; Medicine of Dogs)
Philip graduated from Massey University in New Zealand in 1992, and spent 7 years in small animal practice before undertaking a 3-year residency in veterinary emergency and critical care at the University of Melbourne in 1998.

Following his residency, Philip worked for nearly 6 years at the Animal Emergency Centre in Melbourne, becoming the Senior Veterinarian at the centre in 2004. In 2006, Philip undertook a 1-year surgical externship before moving to Townsville to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at JCU.
Philip is also co-founder, and director of Vet Education Pty Ltd (www.veteducation.com) – one of Australia’s leading providers of online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary nurses.

Philip has published numerous manuals and guides concerning emergency medicine, including a CRI manual, haematology and biochemistry interpretation guide, emergency anaesthesia guide, and a ventilation therapy manual for small animals, in addition to being published in peer reviewed literature.

Philip’s key interests in veterinary science include respiratory emergencies, ventilation therapy, envenomations and toxicology.
