About the webinar

Many people don’t like consulting or find it difficult. Confidence can be an issue with any aspect of veterinary nursing, but it can be more of an issue when you have people watching you. This webinar is going to look at some top tips to help you improve your consulting skills, your communications with pet owners and how to make your work life generally a bit easier. I’m going to run through some survey results that show you what pet owners really think of veterinary nurse clinics and consults – it might make you think a bit differently about them.

Nicola Lakeman

MSc BSc(Hons) RVN CertSAN CertVNECC VTS(Nutrition)

Nicola works as the Nutrition Manager for IVC Evidensia. Nicola graduated from Hartpury College with an honours degree in Equine Science, and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2002, achieving her VTS in nutrition in 2014 and a Master’s degree in Advanced Veterinary Nursing with Glasgow University in 2021. Nicola has written for many veterinary publications and textbooks and is the editor of Aspinall’s Complete Textbook of Veterinary Nursing. Nicola is one of the Consultant Editors for The Veterinary Nurse. Nicola has won the BVNA / Blue Cross VN of the year award in 2010, the College of Animal Welfare Barbara Cooper Professional Development Award for outstanding service to the veterinary nursing profession in 2012 and in 2024 the BSAVA Bruce Vivash Jones award for recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of small animal veterinary nursing.

Dr Philip Judge

BVSc MVS PG Cert Vet Clin Stud MACVSc (Vet. Emergency and Critical Care; Medicine of Dogs)
Philip graduated from Massey University in New Zealand in 1992, and spent 7 years in small animal practice before undertaking a 3-year residency in veterinary emergency and critical care at the University of Melbourne in 1998.

Following his residency, Philip worked for nearly 6 years at the Animal Emergency Centre in Melbourne, becoming the Senior Veterinarian at the centre in 2004. In 2006, Philip undertook a 1-year surgical externship before moving to Townsville to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at JCU.
Philip is also co-founder, and director of Vet Education Pty Ltd (www.veteducation.com) – one of Australia’s leading providers of online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary nurses.

Philip has published numerous manuals and guides concerning emergency medicine, including a CRI manual, haematology and biochemistry interpretation guide, emergency anaesthesia guide, and a ventilation therapy manual for small animals, in addition to being published in peer reviewed literature.

Philip’s key interests in veterinary science include respiratory emergencies, ventilation therapy, envenomations and toxicology.
