Flick Caldwell

DipAVN(Surg & Anaes). BSc(Hons) CVN DipHECVN RVN
Flick qualified as a RVN in 2006 in a small animal practice in the Highlands of Scotland. She moved to Yorkshire to pursue a career in referral nursing and gained the RCVS Diploma in Advanced nursing, specialising in anaesthesia, surgery and OR practice. Flick has extensive experience working as a specialist referral nurse predominantly in ICU care, surgery, and anaesthesia, and has undertaken specialist training programmes and mentored VN and Veterinary students. Flick moved into teaching in 2020 as a VN educator and quickly progressed on to becoming a university lecturer in Animal Health and Science. Flick’s passion for teaching clinical diseases and pathophysiology has led to a specialist interest in clinical anatomy and pathology. She plans to gain a master’s degree in clinical anatomy to advance her clinical knowledge in the treatment and management of medical and surgical conditions. Flick’s experience in anatomy labs has led to a passion of teaching anatomy & pathophysiology through guided dissections and interactive CPD sessions. Flick is a keen academic writer and enjoys research that leads to making proactive changes to provide evidence-based, best-practice nursing care to veterinary patients. She is currently studying for the ISVPS advanced nurse certificate in surgery and will also be starting university in September to study for an MSc in advanced veterinary nursing (incorporating surgery and pain management techniques). Flick comes as a ‘duo’ with her Medical Detection Dog partnership with super-Labrador, Bowie. He alerts Flick to impending hypotensive episodes that can lead to dangerous syncope-related crises. Flick is a huge advocate for mental health and frequently speaks about mental health disorders and living with disability, imposter syndrome, and complex PTSD.
