About this Lecture
About this Lecture
The American Veterinary Medical Association estimated in 2019 that there were 58 million owned cats and 76 million owned dogs in the United States. Despite cats being close to dog numbers in the US, only about 9% of the calls to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center were regarding cats. We will discuss how cats differences in metabolism, kinetics, individual tastes, grooming habits, and red blood cells influences their sensitivity to toxins. We will also discuss the trick process of inducing emesis in cats. Finally, we will discuss specific toxins and how they will often have a different presentation, toxicological concerns, and treatment differences in cats, especially touching on glo jewelry, potpourri, acetaminophen, nephrotoxic lilies, venlafaxine, and permethrin.
