Given the emergence of multi-resistance strains of bacteria, it is now more important than ever to review the way we manage our surgical patients before, during and after surgery. We will look at some of the historical aspects of aseptic technique and the use of prophylactic antibiotics as well as the current recommendations for empirical antibiotic therapy, post-operative antibiotics and strategies to reduce the onset and impact of Surgical Site Infections in our patients.
