About this Lecture
In this program, participants will gain further knowledge about the common malocclusions that we are currently seeing in puppies and young dogs. The occurrence of dental malocclusions in puppies and immature dogs seem to be on the rise, especially within the smaller breeds. Some of the reasons for this increase is due to the rise of the “pandemic puppy” breeding phenomenon, as well as a greater awareness and identification of abnormal bites amongst veterinarians and dog owners alike, when these puppies first present to their primary care veterinarian. This discussion will, firstly look at normal patterns of tooth eruption in dogs, secondly, describe what is considered to be a normal occlusion, according to breed standards, and finally, offer insights into the early detection of dental malocclusions, including treatment options available, including the best time to intervene, especially if the malocclusion is causing discomfort or pain (or may lead to future pain).
