About this Lecture
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common issue affecting many veterinary patients. Early treatment considerations include management of the dietary phosphate restriction, management of systemic blood pressure and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), and management of proteinuria. However, as CKD progresses to more advanced stages, the treatment focus shifts to oral/GI phosphorus binding, control of systemic acidosis, management of CRF-associated anemia, maintenance of hydration and caloric intake, appetite stimulation and gastrointestinal mucosal protection.
