Rowena’s background is in animal behaviour and welfare, having graduated from the University of Bristol in 2009 with a BSc (Hons) in Animal Behaviour and Welfare (1st Class). Rowena joined the Royal Veterinary College as a PhD student in 2009 (awarded in 2013), and she has since been a Postdoctoral Researcher (2013-2016) and a BBSRC Future Leader Fellow (2017-2020). Rowena is now the Lecturer in Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science (2020-) and leads a group exploring diverse topics in this area, with a focus on chronic and inherited disorders in the dog. In 2016, she was awarded the UFAW Young Animal Welfare Scientist of the Year award. Rowena is an Editorial Board Member for the Journal Scientific Reports, and a Coordinating Group Member for the BBSRC-UFAW Animal Welfare Research Network. She has co-authored over 60 papers on the health and welfare of dogs and cats since 2012, and her new book ‘Health and Welfare of Brachycephalic (Flat-faced) Companion Animals’, co-authored with Dr Dan O’Neill is published in July 2021.

Dan graduated in veterinary from Dublin in 1987. After 22 years in small and large animal general practice, he gained an MSc in epidemiology in 2009 and a PhD in 2014 at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) for developing the VetCompass™ Programme. Dan is Senior Lecturer in Companion Animal Epidemiology at the RVC where he leads the VetCompass™ Programme to evaluate breed effects on the health of dogs and cats. He has authored over 95 papers from 2012 to 2021. He co-authored the 3rd edition of the book ‘Breed Predispositions to Disease in Dogs and Cats’. His new book ‘Health and Welfare of Brachycephalic (Flat-faced) Companion Animals’ is co-authored with Dr Rowena Packer is published in July 2021. He chairs the UK Brachycephalic Working Group and is a founding member of the International Collaborative on Extreme Conformation in Dogs. Dan was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal college of Veterinary Surgeons in 2018 and the BSAVA Blaine Award for Advancement of Small Animal Science in 2019.

Dr Philip Judge

Philip graduated from Massey University in New Zealand in 1992, and spent 7 years in small animal practice before undertaking a 3-year residency in veterinary emergency and critical care at the University of Melbourne in 1998.

Following his residency, Philip worked for nearly 6 years at the Animal Emergency Centre in Melbourne, becoming the Senior Veterinarian at the centre in 2004. In 2006, Philip undertook a 1-year surgical externship before moving to Townsville to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at JCU.
Philip is also co-founder, and director of Vet Education Pty Ltd (www.veteducation.com) – one of Australia’s leading providers of online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary nurses.

Philip has published numerous manuals and guides concerning emergency medicine, including a CRI manual, haematology and biochemistry interpretation guide, emergency anaesthesia guide, and a ventilation therapy manual for small animals, in addition to being published in peer reviewed literature.

Philip’s key interests in veterinary science include respiratory emergencies, ventilation therapy, envenomations and toxicology.
