About this Lecture
About this Lecture
The patient with pericardial effusion can present with a variety of symptoms- from abdominal distension and lethargy, to fulminant right sided heart failure, collapse, syncope and sudden death. It falls on the clinician, therefore, to recognise pericardial effusion as an important differential in patients across a wide clinical spectrum, and to act promptly to relieve the effusion to restore normal cardiac output with minimal delay. This lecture will review the emergency approach to pericardial effusion diagnosis and management, along with a review of causes and current long-term therapeutics in these oftentimes critical patients.
Lecture Abstract:
The patient with pericardial effusion can present with a variety of symptoms- from abdominal distension and lethargy, to fulminant right sided heart failure, collapse, syncope and sudden death. It falls on the clinician, therefore, to recognise pericardial effusion as an important differential in patients across a wide clinical spectrum, and to act promptly to relieve the effusion to restore normal cardiac output with minimal delay.
Furthermore, the diagnosis of an aetiology of pericardial effusion can, at times, be challenging. This lecture will review the emergency approach to pericardial effusion diagnosis and management, along with a review of causes and current long-term therapeutics in these oftentimes critical patients, using published literature as a benchmark.
Program agenda:
Define pericardial effusion
Review common signs and symptoms
Review a diagnostic approach and emergency management
Review aetiology, diagnosis and current long-term therapy options
Learning Objectives
To understand the breadth of clinical signs associated with pericardial effusion
To review pericardiocentesis in the context of emergency management of pericardial effusion
To understand the benefits and limitations of diagnostic tests for the aetiology of pericardial effusion
To understand long-term patient management
