Leon holds qualifications and expertise across a diverse range of fields including biological, veterinary and medical sciences, higher education, pain research, anaesthesia, pharmaceutical research and development. He graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Murdoch University (Western Australia) in 2009. Following graduation he undertook an internship in anaesthesia, emergency and critical care medicine. Leon joined the Melbourne Veterinary School’s anaesthesia and analgesia section at the University of Melbourne in 2010 where he completed a specialty training program in anaesthesia and pain management, a clinical master degree in anaesthesia as well as a PhD in pain-management and assessment. In 2015 he completed an externship in anaesthesia and trauma management at The Austin and Royal Melbourne Hospitals. Leon is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists anaesthesia chapter, and an Australasian Veterinary Boards Council registered specialist in anaesthesia. Leon is a director of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Pain Management Australia, an adjunct senior lecturer at Murdoch University and senior research fellow at Curtin University. Recently Leon founded The Vet Pharmacist, a trusted supplier of quality medicinal cannabis pharmaceuticals to the veterinary industry. Leon’s current clinical research focuses on examining the efficacy of medicinal cannabis across multiple species; the use of Quality of Life as a primary outcome measure for chronic disease; and the development of assessment and management strategies for complex pain disorders. His passion for the veterinary profession has led him to join the Executive Committee of the Australian Small Animal Veterinarians (ASAV), AVA SIG.

Emma graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from James Cook University in 2011. After some time in general practice, she completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Sydney and then an three year anaesthesia and analgesia residency at the University of Melbourne. She passed her speciality board exams and became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia in 2020. Emma is also a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists Anaesthesia chapter. Since 2019 Emma has been a veterinary anaesthetist at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH). Her interests include critical care anaesthesia, drug regulation &management and pain management, particularly local anaesthesia – with her Master’s thesis assessing the transversus abdominal plane local anaesthesia block in dogs.

Dr Philip Judge

BVSc MVS PG Cert Vet Clin Stud MACVSc (Vet. Emergency and Critical Care; Medicine of Dogs)
Philip graduated from Massey University in New Zealand in 1992, and spent 7 years in small animal practice before undertaking a 3-year residency in veterinary emergency and critical care at the University of Melbourne in 1998.

Following his residency, Philip worked for nearly 6 years at the Animal Emergency Centre in Melbourne, becoming the Senior Veterinarian at the centre in 2004. In 2006, Philip undertook a 1-year surgical externship before moving to Townsville to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at JCU.
Philip is also co-founder, and director of Vet Education Pty Ltd (www.veteducation.com) – one of Australia’s leading providers of online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary nurses.

Philip has published numerous manuals and guides concerning emergency medicine, including a CRI manual, haematology and biochemistry interpretation guide, emergency anaesthesia guide, and a ventilation therapy manual for small animals, in addition to being published in peer reviewed literature.

Philip’s key interests in veterinary science include respiratory emergencies, ventilation therapy, envenomations and toxicology.
